The Unification Plaza Prayer Meeting (Director: Missionary Lee Jung-in), which holds prayer meetings for the evangelization of North Korea, held its 162nd Unification Plaza Prayer Meeting on the 30th of last month at 11:00 AM (local time) between the Lincoln Memorial Center and the Korean War Veterans Park in Washington, D.C. At the prayer meeting, attendees read a prayer together and prayed for North Korean underground church members and North Korean residents. Pastor Kim Hyun-taek (Director of the Army Christian Soldiers’ Association) then preached.

Pastor Kim said, “I would like to first thank God for giving me the grace to be here in such a precious place. Every time I come to the United States, I am challenged and moved by the fact that there are people praying like this and that there is a gathering for prayer. I serve the Christian Association of the Army, and there are key generals and many key leaders there,” and “When I come here, I think that our soldiers are not true patriots, but that the people here are true patriots. I think that those of you who pray in the heart of America with the heart of Jesus Christ are the one person, the spiritual watchman, the spiritual last bastion that God is looking for in the last days.”

He said, “When I see you all gathered here, I think of Moses praying with holy hands on the top of the mountain to fight the Amalek army. I think this is the top of that mountain. When I look at the world these days, it seems hopeless. When I look at reality, I feel discouraged. However, I want to tell you that when I look at you, I feel true hope. Maybe we are living in a time like Sodom and Gomorrah. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because there were not 10 righteous people. However, I think that God is postponing judgment because there are righteous people like you in this age.”

Pastor Kim said, “John Knox, the founder of Puritanism, said, ‘One person who prays is stronger than a nation that does not pray.’ We see many examples of history in the Bible where a nation lives and a community lives and dies through a person who prays. King Hezekiah’s prayer, Moses, Esther, and Elijah are examples of people who created such history.” He continued, “The people of the world are not easy, and the power of Satan is not easy. In situations where we have no power to fight against them and do not know what to do, I hope that we only look to the Lord. Prayer is not simply an act of faith where we ask God for our needs. I believe that prayer can truly solve life-or-death issues.”

He continued, “If you look at Exodus 17, in the war against Amalek, when Moses raised his hand, the Israelites won, and when he lowered his hand, the Israelites lost. Losing the war means that many soldiers and people died. Likewise, if I think that if I don’t pray for a few hours a day, my family will die, my community will die, and my country will die, I think we must wake up and pray. Spiritually, if we don’t pray, my family will die spiritually. And so will my community. But we don’t pray. I once saw a shocking survey result. In a survey of 2,000 people in Texas, 80.5% of the respondents said they did not pray for more than 5 minutes a day. And 85.7% of the respondents said they did not pray for more than 10 minutes a day, except during worship and mealtimes.”

Pastor Kim said, “One thing we must remember is that when we do not pray, Satan works. Ephesians 6:12 says, ‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’ God is always telling us to wake up and pray and ask. Martin Luther said that a day without praying for more than two hours is a day of defeat by the devil. I strongly agree with this word. And the ministry that I focus on the most in my pastoral ministry is the ministry of prayer. I experience every day how powerful Satan’s plan of interference is.”

Then, “If you look at the book ‘Satan’s Strategy Meeting,’ you will see that Satan uses various strategies to make Christians powerless. Satan has been thinking a lot about how to make Christians powerless and has used all kinds of means to make Christians powerless for thousands of years. However, the more this happens, the more martyrs and heroes of faith appear. Therefore, the most suitable way for Satan to powerless Christians is to make them busy and put prayer as a lower priority,” he said. “While serving as a soldier for 40 years, I have studied and pondered how to fight and win against the enemy. I think that what determines victory or defeat in war is not cutting-edge weapons or nuclear weapons, but the spiritual weapon of prayer. 2 Corinthians 10:4 says, ‘The weapons we fight with are not of the flesh, but powerful enough to destroy strongholds.’ We must enjoy and use God’s power through prayer.”

Pastor Kim said, “I think prayer is a spiritual Wi-Fi router that connects us to God. If we are not connected to God through our prayers, we cannot become powerful Christians. However, Satan uses all kinds of methods to prevent us from becoming powerful Christians. I try hard to pray for more than two hours a day. However, on days when I pray enough, the problem does not seem that big, but if I miss prayer even for a moment, the problem seems big and Satan seems strong. I think you have had this experience. I hope you deeply hold on to the words that there is no other easy way but prayer. Prayer is spiritual breathing, and if we do not pray, we are not breathing and we die. I hope you deeply hold on to the words in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, ‘Pray without ceasing.’”

Finally, he said, “I believe that each and every one of you is the person that God is looking for in this age. At this time when our prayers are desperately needed, we all need to risk our lives like Moses and climb up into the mountain valleys every day, recognizing that the lives of our families and communities depend on our prayers in this battlefield called the world, and I believe that we should not take our arms off toward God. I hope that you will praise God who will open the gates of heaven and pour down fire on our prayers, and that you will go forward praying to God who answers our prayers.”

Meanwhile, the attendees continued to pray together for the protection of fetal life, the unification of the gospel, and the Republic of Korea.
